Writing for August Publications

August Publications

In this age of self-publishing, why would you want to submit a book to a small publisher like August Publications? Four reasons: experience, promotion, production and distribution.

EXPERIENCE: Before launching August Publications, publisher Kevin Reichard was a writer and series editor at many leading publications/publishing houses, including MIS:Press/Henry Holt, internet.com/Jupitermedia, Ziff-Davis/PC Magazine and C|Net, in a career that included magazines, book and website writing and production. Backed by this experience in book, magazine and Web publishing, we can guide your work to the most appropriate medium.

PROMOTION: Our promotional efforts are focused: We take the time to reach the right people rather than throwing a bunch of press releases against a wall to see what will stick. We promote both on our own Websites — which reach tens of thousands of readers daily — and with targeted press releases. In addition, many of our titles are excerpted in daily newspapers, providing invaluable exposure to a local audience.

PRODUCTION: Yes, you could hire a copy editor, commission cover art, pay for a proofreader, contract for a book and eBook layout, work for distribution at an online bookseller (difficult) or a bookstore chain (darn near impossible). Writing the manuscript is only the first step in a long process of creating a book. Anyone who tells you this is a simple process is lying to you: producing a quality publication is easier than it was 20 years ago, but it’s not easy, and we have the infrastructure already in place. We’re committed to high-quality publications — like yours.

DISTRIBUTION: Besides direct sales on this website, August Publications print titles are distributed with national distributors (Baker & Taylor) and directly to bookstores (Barnes & Noble), with eBook titles carried by Amazon.com and BN.com.

We’re not a general-interest publisher; we don’t do fiction, for instance. Our previous books have focused on sports — mostly baseball — and our New West Books line focuses on topic of importance to the Rocky Mountain (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico) region covered in our Yellowstone Insider website.

If you agree, drop us a line via email and tell us about your great piece of writing. Please include an outline, a finished chapter, a bio and links to some clips. We look forward to hearing from you.
