At age 18, he receives his first opportunity when his hometown New York Yankees hire him as a ballboy. But before he can report for duty, the job disappears.

Undeterred, his passion for the game endures. After graduating from college in 1971, he crisscrosses the United States three times, knocking on the doors of baseball clubs in search of an opportunity. Four years later, perseverance pays off when he lands an entry-level position with the San Diego Padres.
